A beautiful mosque dominates the waterfront at Mutrah, flanked by the elegant 19th century houses of prosperous merchants who, from their verandas, could keep an eye on the comings and goings in the harbour. As so often in Oman, visitors and the public are well looked-after, in this case by beautiful marble seating to enable them to enjoy the view of the harbour, which includes traditional dhows, as well as modern craft. At the end of the waterfront nearest the commercial harbour is the fish market, which is well worth visiting in the early morning on Thursdays and Fridays.
